A group of young footballers have made an impressive start to their time at Rossett School with a series of triumphs.
The Year 7 boys’ team has won the area 11-a-side tournament after beating St Aidan’s 6-3 in the final.
Sports teacher Mike Sweetman, who is also the school’s progress and achievement leader for Year 7, said: “The final was a brilliant game played in a great spirit by both sides.
“It was an end-to-end game and we were 4-2 ahead by half time. The whole team was resolute in the second half and defended really well.
“Josh Fleary, who also plays for the Leeds United Academy, and Oli Daniels who is in the Doncaster Rovers Academy, were both on top form, but it really was a team effort.
“They can all be incredibly proud of themselves, not just for winning this tournament but for the way they have played all season.”
Prior to their most recent win, the team was victorious in the area 7-a-side tournament, as well as being runner-up in the area 5-a-side tournament.
On top of that, the Year 7 boys reached the last 64 schools in the country in the English Schools National Cup.
They were knocked out by a team from Manchester – which has a history of producing outstanding players.
Mr Sweetman said: “When we arrived in reception, there was a picture of Manchester United’s Nicky Butt holding the European Cup. He was a former pupil at the school, so we knew we were up against a good side, but I was very proud of how the team performed against such strong opposition.”
