Harrogate Railway Ladies returned 5-2 winners from their trip to Brighouse, despite some atrocious conditions.
Brighouse are not a team to be taken lightly, and certainly put the pressure on Railway for the first 20 mins. On a greasy surface, ball control looked difficult for Railway and after 26 minutes Brighouse opened the scoring with a fine strike. Railway managed to put some pressure onto the Brighouse defence, and when the ball was played out wide to Nicola Hadley she ran inside and was taken down to earn a free kick from 20 yards.
Issy Rowe stepped up to curl the ball into the top left corner for an equaliser 38 minutes into the game.
After half time Railway came out more determined and straight away won two corners.
On 58 minutes Hannah Campbell ran through the middle and slotted the ball under the ‘keeper.
Brighouse forced some great defending by Railway, especially player of the match Catherine Swinn, but Railway held on.
In the 67th minute midfielder Jodi Hodgson’s brilliant 30-yard strike put them 3-1 ahead.
Winning three corners in succession, it fell to Ellie Mc Cloud who put her name on the score sheet. Brighouse kept pressing and gaps opened up for Railway.
This allowed Campbell to take full advantage and drive the ball into the near front post.
A late free kick saw Brighouse reduce their defecit but Railway still claimed a 5-2 victory.
They host Keighley in the County Cup on Sunday (2pm kick-off).
