Harrogate Railway have installed Wetherby Athletic stalwart Martin Powell as assistant manager.

Powell was involved in Lee Ashforth’s backroom staff during the club’s relegation from the Evo-Stik League this season, joining as a first team coach.

Simon Wood stood down as Ashforth’s right-hand man at the end of the season to focus on his playing career.

Wood ended the season playing midweek matches for Liversedge, who Railway will face in NCEL Premier next season after they beat off relegation.

Ashforth had previously stated his desire to hire a local assistant manager as Wood’s replacement to help find players to fight their campaign in Northern Counties East League next season.

Powell has been a prominent figure at amateur side Wetherby for several years and used to manage the Ingsmen’s Claro Sunday League side and founded the Under 21 side.

Ashforth said: “He has got his coaching badges which is important and has a good manner with the players.

“A lot of the time he will act as the go between with the manager and the players and he’s well respected.”

Meanwhile, long-serving left-back Lawrance Hunter has left Station View and will join Bamber Bridge next season.

Nathan Curtis and Jack Stockdill have also told Ashforth of their intentions to play elsewhere.

Club captain Dan Thirkell had already announced his intention to leave Station View and is poised to sign with former boss Billy Miller at Tadcaster Albion.

Railway now have a rebuilding mission on their hands following the loss of several loan signings at the end of the season.

Ashforth said his two problem positions were at left-back and in goal.

Railway are holding open trials on Saturday, June 25 from 1pm.
