Harrogate Veterans lost their opening Seniors World Cup fixture 1-0 against Thailand last night.
In the late afternoon sun, the England team weathered a tricky first half in which keeper Darren Heyes made two fine saves to deny the lively host nation and Kevin Mooney cleared off the line.
Ten minutes into the second half, the English had a set back when full back Steve King, attempting to clear a deflected shot, could only the head the ball into his own net.
Manager Paul Bell tried to change it around.
But they couldn’t find a way back into the contest.
“At the end of the day, Thailand played some very good football in conditions that favoured them,” said manager Bell.
“Defensively we restricted them to just a few chances but we were only able to create a few ourselves. Overall I can’t fault the effort the players put in and for a long time it seemed that we could get a least a draw out of the game.”
In the other group A game, Taiwan beat the United Arab Emirates 4-1. England’s next game is tomorrow night against the UAE (5pm ko).
