Chib Chilaka is the stand-out name to be released by Harrogate Town manager Simon Weaver.
The 26-year-old fired Town into the second round of the FA Cup and scored 17 goals for the club
Boss Weaver said: “It was a very difficult decision. He’s given us some special moments.
“But I want to finish higher. I need more movement up front.
“The ball needs to stick up there for hold up play. Chib’s still working on his game. He’s outstanding but I need a sustained team.
“I feel I have to look around and make sure I am making the right choices. I have to thing what’s the best for Harrogate Town.”
Former Benfica stopper Jose Da Veiga, midfielder Luke Dean and targetman Jonny Allan have also been released.
Weaver is visiting players to explain his plans in person after being let go as a player by voice mail.
“I want to see people face to face. They have given everything and I am putting the effort back in.
“I am not a coward. I will not back away. If it takes a bit more time, I apologise but everyone of our players deserve the right for me to visit.”
The boss said Dean was very close to gaining a contract after impressing towards the end of the season.
“Luke started the season for me as one of the best midfield players at this level,” he said.
“He’s got to kick on. He plateaued at times and he can’t do that if he wants to get to the next level. I’ll be helping him find a new club.
“Michael Woods has emerged and done well and there is a lot of midfielders out there I think can do well.”
Dave Merris, Dwayne Samuels, Adam Nowakowski and Alan White have re-signed. Michael Woods and Matt Bloomer have agreed to sign while Paul Beesley will start next term on non-contract.
Midfielders Paul Bolland and Danny Forrest remain in talks with the club. Colin Larkin has left for Conference side Gateshead.
Weaver said: “When he first came to the club he said he had agreed to join Gateshead at the end of the season.
“It’s full time and it’s 20 minutes from where he lives.
“His movement off the ball is where we want to be be. He’s intelligent but we are looking for more goals.
Weaver has yet to make any signings but said he is close to securing two deals.
He said: “Tom Platt and Dom Knowles gave us a step up in class and showed us that level. It’s up to me to find that again.
“We have to get the balance right and I am confident we will. A few players are very positive to come.
“I don’t want to be brash about who we have got.”
