Harrogate Town’s FA Cup goal hero Chib Chilaka praised his teammates after the historic win over Torquay on Saturday.
Chilaka’s 20th minute strike was enough to set up a second round home tie against Hastings United.
The midfielder told the Harrogate Advertiser about the moment he scored his, and his club’s, most important goal.
He said: “It was the most special goal I have ever scored, for the fact it propelled us into the next round.
“I haven’t played properly in the FA Cup or at this level, so any goal at that level is going to take over from anything else.
“When the ball was there, I thought, right, I know more or less where the goal is, so I directed it towards the goal. Luckily it was on target, just, but when it went in I was overjoyed.”
Chilaka missed an opportunity to double Town’s lead in the second half, but says he knew the miss would be covered by the hard work of his teammates.
He said: “When you’re under pressure against any team and you get a chance like that and you miss it, the first thing that goes through your mind is I hope they dont go up and score at the other end. That was the first thing on my mind but the lads were defending well and we looked solid at the back so I knew we would hold on to win.”
He added: “I am so proud of the lads, the staff and the fans who came to watch. It is great for everyone involved with Harrogate Town.
“Torquay were a really efficient team with some good footballers, and I thought they were unfortunate, but our defence hung in there. We hung in there as a team, and made it more difficult for them to break us down.”
