Last week saw the annual Otley town centre closed-circuit road race which attracts hundreds of spectators.

The event features youth races, a support race and the main event, which is part of the Elite Mens’ circuit series.

Two Harrogate Nova riders entered the support race which featured local rider and world champion Lizzie Armitstead.

With nearly 100 riders and a short, tight course, these races provide a lung-bursting high energy 45 minute race, often full of incident and this year was no different.

Armitstead showing her class by riding at the front of the peleton for most of the race.

Nova’s Paul Lehan and Gary Marks both clung to the main bunch, but as proceedings had been delayed through the evening, the organisers had to cut the race short mid race, leaving many riders unaware they were on the last lap. Nevertheless, Paul managed to finish in the main bunch with Gary not far behind in the second group over the line. The main elite event was won by another local rider, Scott Thwaites of Endura Racing.
