Letter: Tour de Yorkshire - HBC funding is a waste of money

Last week I learnt that Harrogate Borough Council will spend £350,000 to host a stage in the Tour de Yorkshire 2017.

This is worse than Alice in Wonderland economics.

It flies in the face of the published experience of communities who have hosted sporting events only to find that they are left with nothing except a huge financial hole in their local budgets.

A spokeswoman for HBC said that hosting the Tour de France in 2014 raised the profile of the district on the world stage.

As a community, we shall say au revoir to £350,000 from our borough council in exchange for what?

This is money that could have been used to help the less well off in Harrogate.

This is the real scandal.
