Letter: Such a sad sight at Grove Road cemetery

I was very pleased to see the soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment parading through the town in remembrance of one of their own, Lt Donald Simpson Bell VC.

He richly deserved this highest of accolades. It was wonderful to know that he has not been forgotten.

While visiting Grove Road cemetery recently, I happened upon a memorial to Lt Bell.

It is in a very sad state of repair, broken and tumbled down. His name is legible but fading. I am sorry to see a memorial to a true hero in such a state. It is nobody’s fault, just time and generations passing and weather I suppose. I understand that the monument belongs to the family, and cannot really be interfered with, but it is a sad sight. Could it at least be tidied up? Perhaps a new memorial could be ereccted somewhere more obvious and public. All these brave men deserve to be “never forgotten”.
