Letter: Recycling - Flat rate tax is unacceptable

editorial image

Because of “austerity” imposed by central government and vanity projects such as new council buildings, it is understandable why Harrogate Council has had to impose a charge on recycling garden waste.

What is unacceptable is that Harrogate Tories have imposed a flat rate tax on everyone. Whether you have a small property with a small garden or a large property with a large garden.

There is no justification, either morally or economically, for a flat rate charge when Harrogate Council could easily have charged in proportion to council tax banding, which would have been much fairer.

One can only assume that Harrogate Council’s ruling Conservative councillors are trying to recreate the Conservative’s last flat rate tax – the Poll Tax.
