Letter: Brexit - Referendum is advisory only

We should not be surprised by Andrew Jones vote in favour of triggering Article 50, despite his pro-Remain views. He has consistently shown an inability to think independently at Westminster and blindly follows the government whip.

I find it a great concern that he does not seem to understand that he is our elected representative, and in this case he has seriously failed to represent Harrogate, which I feel proud to say voted to Remain. I also feel concern that he and many other MPs seem to feel that a referendum is sovereign over parliament. A referendum, including this one, is advisory only.

Parliament is sovereign and Andrew Jones and the 497 others who voted the same way have failed to take the responsibility they were elected to uphold - to scrutinise legislation.
