ChildLine founder Esther Rantzen visited Harrogate this week to deliver a talk on her new project to help lonely people, The Silver Line.
The former journalist addressed members of the Townswomen’s Guilds, who were gathered at the Harrogate International Centre for the AGM.
She spoke in her capacity as National Vice President of the organisation.
The Silver Line is a specialist helpline for lonely people, and will be officially launched later this year.
Esther said: “Loneliness is a problem which needs alleviated, particularly among older people.
“When I wrote about my own loneliness, I got a lot of letters, and a lot that paid tribute to the Townswomen’s Guild, who are clearly providing a very important service to communities right across the UK.
“We are looking for volunteer befrienders for when we launch in November.”
She continued: “We have already seen with ChildLine that you can do so much through the safety and confidentiality of a phone cell.
“People talk about things which maybe they can’t bring up with their own family. You can actually provide help and change lives.
“We have proved it over 26 years with ChildLine and I hope to do the same with The Silver Line.”
