The Ospreys Return!: briefly to Gouthwaite last week, possibly en route to Africa. Angus Gosman, of Bouthwaite, informs us that he saw a pair of low-flying osprey, seemingly attracted to a particular spot where a farmer was mowing his field. The sighting was made even more special by the added appearance of a pair of red kites, a pair of buzzards, a kestrel and sparrowhawk, all circling low over the field together, maybe seeking a lunch of rabbit! Angus comments how lucky he was to see all five raptors in the sky all at once!
Upper Nidderdale Flower Club: enjoyed a very interesting and informative talk, given by plantsman and garden designer, Peter Foley from Waddow Hall gardens, near Pendle Hill. Former owner of Holden Clough Nursery, near Bowland, he informed the ladies that his son has now taken over from him and that he has been fortunate enough to have recently been named BBC Gardener of theYear. Mr Foley is on the Northern Plant Heritage committee which aims to keep old varieties going, a judge for best kept village in Lancashire and has exhibited at Tatton Park Flower Show. His plant knowledge was superior and members learned a lot from his comprehensive slide show. Next month the flower club are holding a workshop evening with Pam Kitchen, which will be suitable for anyone wanting to learn the craft of flower arranging, so beginners are therefore very welcome.
