THERE are fears that up to 100 grit bins could be lost across the Harrogate district, after North Yorkshire announced a review of existing stores.
Coun Geoff Webber, leader of the Lib Dems at County Hall, says the regional authority has threatened to give up responsibility for 100 grit bins on streets in the Harrogate and Knaresborough constituency.
North Yorkshire denies it has yet identified any bins for removal, though it confirmed it is beginning a review.
Meanwhile, Harrogate says it will not be able to pay for any stores relinquished by the county council, as there is no money available.
Coun Webber said he had reacted “with amazement” to North Yorkshire’s behaviour.
“I find it difficult to believe that after the last two bad winters anyone would suggest reducing the provision of grit bins,” he added.
