Long Johns and thermals at the ready - Northern Rail is preparing for winter.
The winter wear has been handed out to staff and 1,000 tonnes of rock salt distributed across the network, and each of Northern’s 330 trains, including those serving Harrogate on the Leeds to York line, is ready for the cold snap.
Trains have all had heating systems checked and essential winter kits provided, including de-icer and protection for the warning horns so they are not affected by the snow.
Employees have undergone additional training to ensure they are fully up to speed on how to keep the services as robust as possible during the colder weather.
Alex Hynes is Managing Director of Northern. He said: “Every year we prepare for the winter weather in every way we can as freezing weather brings a variety of problems to the railway and the running of trains.
“This season has so far been particularly mild but with cold weather coming up over the coming weeks, we are preparing to use the tonnes of rock salt and de-icer and making sure our colleagues are layering up and keeping as warm as possible and urge our customers to do the same!”
