AN ANTIQUE brown trout stolen from outside a Harrogate shop has been returned.

The metal figure, which hung outside the Brown Trout in Cold Bath Road, mysteriously disappeared last month.

With no idea where it could have gone, Tim Brown, who runs the shooting and fishing equipment shop, appealed through the Harrogate Advertiser, offering a reward for its safe return.

He said: “It’s not a particularly valuable thing, but it has sentimental value.

“It’s my lucky mascot for the business. I was very keen to get it back.”

And when Mr Brown arrived at the shop on Saturday morning, the fish was waiting for him on the doorstep. Whoever returned him did not claim the reward, but Mr Brown said he will be keeping a much closer eye on him in the future.

“I usually take him in at night,” he said. “The trouble is, I’ve got a memory like a sieve so sometimes I lock up and realise he’s still above my head and I have to get the stepladder out to get him down.

“It’s still a mystery where he went. Maybe he just went upstream on Cold Bath Road for a couple of days, then decided he didn’t like it and came back.

“I’m just glad he’s here and in once piece.”
