Detectives investigating a suspicious house fire in Harrogate which broke out in the early hours of Sunday morning have arrested two men.

A man and a woman had to be rescued by firefighters after a fire broke out in the ground-floor flat on Scargill Road at 2.50am on Sunday morning.

The man, aged 24, was taken to Harrogate District Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. Police say the woman, aged 19, did not need any medical assistance.

“Thankfully neither of the occupants of the flat were seriously injured as a result of this fire. However, the consequences could have been far worse,” said Det Sgt Alan Browne, of Harrogate CID. “If you have any information which could help my investigation I urge you to come forward and contact the police straight away.”

Firefighters had been called just after 2.50am, sending two fire engines to the scene but asking for back-up when they arrived and saw the scale of the blaze.

The fire completely destroyed the room it broke out in, causing severe smoke damage to the rest of the house.

Two men aged 33 and 26, both from Harrogate, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

They have now been released on bail as police enquiries continue.
