A KNARESBOROUGH woman has received an award from St John Ambulance after 34 years of service.
Susan Grant, who is 47 and works at The Forest School, Knaresborough, as a teaching assistant, received the Serving Sister award at the Priory Church of St John, London.
“It was a lovely service, which made me feel very proud to be a member of St John,” she said.
“When the invitation arrived I was so excited I wanted to shout it from the rooftops and let everyone know about it.”
Susan joined the St John Starbeck and Knaresborough division in 1976, as a 13-year-old. In 1986, she received a county commissioner’s commendation for her fast, professional approach in giving first aid to a small baby, acting in the best tradition of St John Ambulance in a difficult situation and taking charge till the ambulance service arrived.
The following year, she set up the division’s badgers group, teaching first aid to children aged five to 10. As a first-aider, she has attended many live events, seeing Queen in concert and meeting Cliff Richard, Aled Jones and the Blue Peter team.
