Substitute Jordan Thewlis gave Harrogate Town a late Christmas present as his second-half winner at Stockport County put them back in the Vanarama National North play-off zone.

Jerry Yates put Town ahead within five minutes after a fine run and cross by Brendon Daniels.

However, the lead lasted less than ten minutes as County found an equaliser when Everton youngster Delial Brewster outpaced the defence and slotted past Peter Crook.

Both sides had chances to go ahead in an end to end first half, with Danny Ellis smacking the bar with a header for Town.

County were presented with their best opportunity to forge ahead when ex-Townie Jonathan Margett's was brought down inside the area, but Crook guessed right to save the striker's penalty kick.

The game continued to to and fro in the second period before Simon Weaver's substitutions reaped almost immediate rewards.

Paul Clayton and Thewlis came on up front for Yates and Dom Knowles. and within three minutes Thewlis delivered a knock-out blow to the 3,000-strong home crowd by finishing off a brisk counter attack.

Jack Emmett almost secured the points when he found the side netting with ten minutes left before Brewster struck a final chance for the hosts straight at Crook.

The Boxing Day win puts Town up to fifth place with 41 points from 20 games.

Weaver's squad are level with North Ferriby United and AFC Fylde and just three points off table toppers Solihull Moors ahead of Bank Holiday Monday's home game against 13th placed Chorley.
