Reading Group: the first meeting of 2013 will be on Wednesday, February 6 at 7pm when the book for discussion is The Hare With the Amber Eyes by Edmund de Vaal. For information about the reading group please call Sylvia Bagnall on 01423 340248.

Parish Council: at the recent meeting the following topics were discussed: flooding, various parts of the village were identified as problem areas following the recent heavy rain and the parish council will look at who should be responsible for remedial work to be undertaken. Parking outside the school: concern was expressed about the safety hazard for the children and passing traffic when too many vehicles were parked near the school. The police were asked to look at measures taken at Lingerfield school and to speak to the parents at Staveley school. Nature Reserve: there continued to be no easy access to the nature reserve at the church/Royal Oak end of the village and the chairman said he would write to the liaison group to clarify the responsibilities of YWT and NYCC in this respect.Vehicle activated speed signs: this had been raised at a recent meeting of parish councils and they had agreed to share VASS around the local villages when one became available. Village green/grass verges: Coun Lloyd Davies was thanked for his work in clearing the shrubs and tidying up around the village green. Recreation field/youth activities: there was some discussion about recent flooding on the field and whether some work could be done to provide a hard surface to improve leisure facilities for the young people of the village. Councillors were keen to improve facilities but would like volunteers from parents to join a committee to help organise and maintain such an amenity. The next parish council meeting will be on March 7.

Village Hall: plans are now well underway for the race night on February 23 and tickets piced at £7.50 (to include a pie and peas supper) are now available. Horses for the races on the evening are also available at £5 each from committee members. Further details are available from me on 01423 340442.

This year’s Staveley Stampede will be on June 16.

No Church service in Stavely this week.
