I must apologise to all readers of this column that our news was not in last week’s Advertiser. No it wasn’t me that muddled up the weeks but a hitch at Ackrills! It was especially distressing as there were all the details for our Remembrance service at the Cenotaph and also details of the Phoenix Players concert at Methodist church. Both of these will have taken place when you read this -I can only apologise.
Starbeck Veterans Club: this group was formed in 1956 and meets at their green ‘hut’ next to the Bowling Club down Spa Lane . For many years it was a men only club where snooker and billiards were played for trophies and members could use the facilities at any time or day. Gradually numbers declined and this year it was agreed to close the club. For several years I have had the honour of being their president and sadly last week presented for the last time the trophies. The meeting hall is emptied and the last remaining members will meet for a meal together this week. I’m sure many Starbeck residents have fond memories of the Veterans and I wish the few remaining members well.
Fit 4 Fun Running: Fit 4 Fun are starting a running group to encourage people to start or restart running for fitness. With trained instructors it is a free ten week course, the lunchtime one starts at Harrogate Council offices in Crescent Gardens at 12.30 to 1.30pm and the evening one starts at Woodfield School in Bilton at 6-7pm This fitness group organises lots of different activities throughout the district and all are free. Don’t forget the one on our Green Gym in Belmont field each Friday. There are details on our community notice board.
Starbeck Luncheon Club: this lunch group meets at Starbeck Methodist church in the Hall every Tuesday at noon serving a three course meal for £3. They now have some vacant places. Anyone interested does not have to be a church member, the only stipulation is that they are single/widow/ widower. Contact: Chris Thomas 01423 887504 I’m told they have some scrummy food!
Scouts tree planting: last Saturday our local Scout group came out with Starbeck in Bloom to plant three new large trees in Addymans Wood. They have helped us each autumn for several years when most of the Scouts were Cubs and each time we seem to pick the Saturday of the first snow of the year! Fortunately this time the snow didn’t last too long and we were able to clear away the old wild flower bed near the play area and clear around the small trees in the wood. This group are very enthusiastic and don’t seem to feel the cold! Next week it is the turn of the Guides to bulb plant so I hope it doesn’t snow for them!
Now that we have changed the clocks: it won’t seem long before the Christmas lights switch on! The Christmas Fair for the Lights Appeal is on Saturday, November 24.
