Herb Evening Tonight: Starbeck in Bloom is hosting a fund raising evening tonight at Starbeck Working Mens Club on Forest Avenue. The doors will open at 6.45pm for an Evening with Herbs. Martin Fish director of Harrogate Flower shows will give a talk and demonstration about growing and using herbs. It will be an entertaining evening and there will be a raffle and goods for sale for Starbeck in Blooms funds and a wide selection of herbs to buy at a stall from Brookside Nurseries. Please try to support us, this year we are in the national Britain in Bloom competition and hope to make Starbeck very special.
Gardens Harrogate: this event is being held on Sunday, May 19 in the Valley Gardens in Harrogate from 11am-3pm There will be 25 groups with displays and plant sales to show the diversity of garden related activities and groups in the Harrogate district. It will make an interesting day out and free too!
Team Francis: Rev Francis Wainaina and his wife Elaine are nearly home now from their sponsored tandem bike ride down the Rhine from Zurich to Starbeck. They arrive in time for Pentecost Sunday and their progress can be followed on their blog on www.teamfrancis.co.uk There are lots of photos and the scenery looks stunning. You can donate on line or at St Andrews church. What an achievement and all the funds are to support the building project. The walls are finished now in front of the church and soon the centre will all be open and being used by Starbeck.
Starbeck Library: at the last meeting of Friends of Starbeck Library Deborah our librarian gave a very positive report on the achievements and activities in our library. It continues to meet and exceed the targets set by North Yorkshire and more and more groups are now using the library. The book group meets on second Wednesdays, the knitting and stitching group meets every Friday and the join in storytime is very popular with little ones. Young volunteers continue to provide IT support every Wednesday and Friday from 4-5pm and Saturdays from 10am-12pm and the police hold drop in sessions once a month. Every Saturday morning the Friends served coffee and during the week, Bakewell, part of Handprints, serve delicious cakes and scones and coffee. If you haven’t yet been to the library pop in the staff are very friendly and helpful!
Love Starbeck: this year the Day of Kindness is on Saturday, June 15 this is a very special day where volunteers give their time to do gardening jobs, help older people with jobs,do group projects for the community alongside Starbeck in Bloom and really do make a difference to Starbeck. If you would like to help either for a few hours or for the day call in at St Andrews and sign up.
Hair Stop: Steph at HairStop on Forest Avenue has once again offered to be the seller and collecting point for Starbeck in Bloom. This year we have a whole new range of items to help our funds-fridge magnet, key rings, lovely gift cards all with photos of Starbeck and costing only £1 and the Starbeck tea towels at £4. She is selling tickets for the herb evening and will shortly have the schedules for the annual flower and vegetable show in August and the application forms for the garden competition in July. It is such a convenient collecting point and so good of her to take the time from her “real” job of hairdressing! Her other window is used all year round by Chris Powell of the Cone Exchange to sell the sacks, buckets etc. It is always worth going to have a look as the range of items for sale changes and all the money goes to charity.
