Scotton Christmas Lights: are now switched on in the pinfold opposite the Guy Fawkes, bigger and brighter than ever and this year featuring a pre Tour de France bike. Thanks once again to the generosity of Howard Cooper for not only putting up the lights but also for supplying the power.

Christmas Church Services: Wednesday, December 18 2pm primary school nativity play in St Thomas Church; Friday, December 20 7pm Carol Service in St Thomas Church with the Benefice Choir; Sunday, December 22, 4th Sunday of Advent 9.30am Eucharist at St Thomas and at 10am Carol Service at the Methodist Church, Preacher Rev Gillian Robertson; Tuesday, December 24, Christmas Eve, Midnight Eucharist (starting at 11.30pm) at All Saints Staveley; Christmas Day 9.30am Eucharist at St Thomas.

Christmas Activities: galore at Scotton Lingerfield School following on their triumph at the Royal Albert Hall, London and the Benjamin Britten Centenary Celebration at the Grand Theatre Leeds on November 23, the school choir will be singing at the Harrogate International Centre Family Christmas Concert on Saturday, December 14 and at the Big Sing in Jacob Smith Park, Scriven on Sunday, December 15 at 2pm. If you haven’t been to the Big Sing before this is a great outdoor community sing - along event with Knaresborough Silver Band – enjoyable whatever the weather. The school nativity play will be performed at 6pm on December 17 and 18 and at 2pm in St Thomas Church on December 18. Tickets available from school.

Guy Fawkes Restaurant Review: which appeared two weeks ago provoked more comment than anything else I’ve written in the last two years, all of it positive apart from one reported remark from a Knaresborough reader. Everyone else thought the piece was interesting, balanced and fair, and complimentary to the pub. In spite of any comments made in the spirit of a “critical friend”, I will certainly be recommending the Guy Fawkes (particularly to our house-swap guests), and our friends who run the Kingfisher Caravan Park are keen to recommend the village pub to their visitors next season.

Church Services: for Sunday, December 8, 2nd Sunday of Advent. There is no service at St Thomas Scotton, but Eucharist at All Saints Staveley at 9.30am; Communion at the Methodist Church at 10am when the preacher will be Rev Emms, and Village Service at St Oswald Farnham at 11am.
