One of Ripon Sailing Club’s longstanding members has been honoured by HRH the Princess Royal.

Ian Smith, a member of the Royal Yachting Association Yorkshire and Humber Committee, has been with Ripon Sailing Club for 35 years.

He was presented with a Lifetime Commitment award from the Princess Royal, President of the RYA for his outstanding dedication and achievements in boating.

Mr Smith, currently sailing secretary for the club is also a key member of a working group set up to integrate training, coaching and racing activities within the club.

“I am delighted to have received this award,” said Mr Smith.

“Having held many roles during my years with the club, it has been a pleasure to work with so many like minded people.

“Colleagues who have not only maintained the spirit of the club’s founders, but who have also worked hard to keep the club moving forward, maintaining its position as a thriving family sailing club.

“The 2011 season has been very successful, we have seen a phenomenal increase in the number of our junior sailors taking on the adults in all our club races.”
