Ripon City Council has objected to plans to redevelop the site of the police station on North Street with high-quality retirement living apartments.
The council claimed at a planning meeting on Monday (February 23) that the proposed building was not in keeping with the rest of the buildings on North Street.
The Mayor of Ripon, Coun Mick Stanley (Con), insisted there was no objection to building a retirement home on the site but opposed the design of the building in a Conservation Area.
He said: “You don’t put a flat roof structure in an area where you have wonderfully elaborate gables. I think someone at the meeting said it’s a bad building being replaced by another bad building.
“We have also still heard nothing from North Yorkshire on a replacement police station even though there are plenty of empty buildings in Ripon that they could use but I suspect it is a financing issue.”
