A STARBECK vicar has been installed as an honorary canon at a special evensong service at Ripon Cathedral.

Rev Francis Wainaina, the vicar of St Andrew’s Church in Starbeck, received the distinction on Sunday.

He said: “In March, I got a letter in a lovely envelope. I thought, ‘I hope all is well’! I opened it and it said they had been thinking about replacing someone who had retired recently and they would like it to be me.

“They said they appreciated the work I have done in St Andrew’s and Starbeck. So I thought, ‘That will do! If it honours the community of Starbeck then I’m happy.’”

Rev Wainaina was born in Kenya, where he was ordained, following training at Oakhill College in London.

After moving to the UK in 1988, he served in Chester, Sheffield and York before settling in the Ripon and Leeds diocese, coming to the parish of St Andrew’s in 2001.
