Conservative candidate Michael Harrison has been elected to North Yorkshire County Council in the Lower Nidderdale and Bishop Monkton seat.
Coun Harrison campaigned after former councillor Heather Joyce Garnett retired.
His win means the Conservatives held the seat with 1,344 votes, followed by UKIP candidate Jeffrey Wells with 24 per cent of the vote, with 605 votes.
Independent Tom Watson took 261 votes, and Labour candidate Andrew Murday took 225 votes.
