Tesco’s six-year battle to open a Skipton Road superstore is facing further delays as building has been stalled until after Harrogate hosts the opening stages of the 2014 Tour de France.
Last week, we revealed that the superstore may not open its doors until 2016.
And now Harrogate Advertiser readers have had their say.
Virginia Sharpe wrote on our Facebook page: “I wonder how [Tesco] will justify the time it takes for shoppers to get to their front door, when the journey along Skipton Road will reduce from a crawl to a full stop with the additional traffic.”
On Twitter, Susie Little wrote: “Let’s hope it’s delayed for good.”
Jean Warren wrote to us: “I don’t think that Tesco should be allowed to carry on with their proposed build.
“We don’t need another supermarket in Harrogate and we certainly don’t need all the traffic, it is bad enough already.”
An Old Barber resident, who did not want named, said: “I have never heard such foolishness in all my life as having a big Tesco on Skipton Road. The last thing we need is another big store.”
Online responder Rocker said: “Another good reason to celebrate the Tour then.”
However, having read last week’s story, an elderly resident called the Newsdesk.
She said: “I think three years is far too long to wait for Tesco to open.
“The sooner it opens, the better.
“It is difficult for people who cannot walk up hills properly to shop in Harrogate. Tesco will make this much easier.”
Would you rather Tesco scrapped its Harrogate plans, or is three years too long to wait? Have your say.
