PRAYERS at Harrogate Council meetings could be under threat after a court ruling.
The High Court has said Bideford Town Council in Devon acted unlawfully by allowing prayers to be said at meetings, following an action brought by the National Secular Society.
A Harrogate Council spokesman said the authority was monitoring the situation and would probably ask for a report as to what to do next.
North Yorkshire County Council said the agenda for its quarterly meeting on Wednesday had been issued before the Bideford court ruling.
A spokesman said: “On this occasion, we are expecting to take prayers before the formal business of the meeting begins and the county council chairman will invite members who wish to join him and his chaplain in prayers to do so.
“We await the outcome of the Bideford appeal with interest.”
