Plans to redevelop Harrogate's BT Training Centre into 88 homes

Plans have been submitted to redevelop the British Telecom (BT) Training Centre on St George’s Road into a ‘unique’ 88 home modern development.

If approved by Harrogate Borough Council, the site will include six one-bedroom, 29 two-bedroom, 30 three-bedroom, 20 four-bedroom and three five-bedroom houses, each with an enclosed garden.

Current occupants, BT, is considering their future need for the site as, after an on-going rationalisation program, the majority of the accommodation is unoccupied.

In an effort to ensure the site does not become vacant, site owners, Telereal Trillium, are hoping to redevelop it to create a ‘high quality and desirable place to live’ for the community.

Stephen Courier, senior planner at Carter Jonas, said the site’s location would make it the ‘ideal position’ for a residential development.

He said: “The development will greatly enhance the quality and appearance of the site, making a positive addition to the local area.

“The plans are very much in the early stages however it has been established by Harrogate Borough Council that the development of the site for housing is acceptable in principle and that it will help to meet the housing requirement in the area.”

The planning application has already been reduced in size after residents complained there would be ‘too many houses’ at a public consultation in July, attended by more than 170 people.

The design strategy has been prepared by architects WCEC Group who said that the residential development would stand out from the traditional new build estates.

Nick Fenton, Associate Director at WCEC Group said:“We are working closely with the council and partners to get the balance right on what is set to be a unique, modern development, with landscaping and green spaces leading to the bordering nature reserve.

“The plans are for homes that will be architecturally-designed - with a mix of traditional stone and slate, as well as more modern materials.”
