Cinema in the Dale: the first film of the New Year will be The Iron Lady, showing on Saturday, January 12 at 7.30pm in Pateley Bridge Memorial Hall. The Iron Lady, Certificate 12A, is a surprising and intimate portrait of Margaret Thatcher (played by Meryl Streep), the first and only female Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. Junior Cinema in the Dale: supported by the Nidderdale Plus Arts Fund presents Brave, a computer-animated adventure fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios, showing at 2pm on Saturday, January 12 in the Memorial Hall, Pateley Bridge. Give blood: the National Blood Service will be visiting the Memorial Hall on, Thursday, January 17. Please make an effort to get along there for one of the two sessions, 2.15-3.45pm or 4.45-7.15pm. Knit and Natter: do you like knitting? You could bring along your own work and have a right good natter. Could you show someone else how to knit? You could knit for charity and still have a right good natter. Would you like to learn to knit? Beginners of all ages will be very welcome. Pateley Bridge Social Club: is located at No 3 Millfield Street. It is a small, friendly, members club with facilities for snooker, billiards and pool. There are currently some vacancies for new members who would be made most welcome. Membership is open to all from 16 years old. The annual subscription is a modest £12 for seniors and £6 for juniors. There are two full sized billiard tables, and a competition standard pool table, now believed to be the only pool table in Pateley Bridge. The club has teams in both the local snooker and billiards leagues. The snooker team is comprised mainly of junior members, captained by Adam Varley, and presently is sitting a creditable third in the league. Peter Chadwick is captain of the billiards team who, at Christmas, were top of their league. Anyone who is interested in having a game, or joining the club should contact either John Richmond who lives next door at No 3A Millfield Street (711460), or Peter Chadwick who lives opposite at No 26 (711753), or Adam Varley on 712253. Alternatively you would be welcome to pop in and see the teams in action. Home games start at 7.30pm and the next ones are: snooker, Tuesdays, January 29 versus Kirby Malzeard and February 5 versus Birstwith. Billiards, Wednesday, January 16 versus Middlesmoor, February 20 versus Hampsthwaite. Billiards, snooker and pool are not normally affected by adverse weather conditions so why not come and give one or all of these games a try? Everyone will be welcome even if you have never previously picked up a cue.
Glasshouses & District Gardening Club: will meet on Thursday, January 17. One of your favourite garden memories. The meeting will be in Dacre and Hartwith Village Hall at 7.45pm and non-members will be welcome to attend.
Nidderdale Society: the next meeting will be on Monday, January 21 and will be a talk by Dr Mather entitled Costa Rica: Gem of Central America, 7.30pm at Dacre Banks Village Hall. Membership of the Nidderdale Society is open to all persons of all ages. The annual fee is currently £7 per person, the payment of which entitles the member to attend all presentation meetings; it also includes light refreshment. Anyone wishing to attend a one off meeting may do so for a payment of £2. The society also organises walks, most of which are not very demanding. They range in distance from about five to 10 miles. These usually start at 10.30am on the Tuesday of the week following each presentation meeting. At present, there is no charge for persons participating in these walks. The next walk will be Knaresborough Carvings, Toffee Park on Tuesday, January 29 starting at Knaresborough Cricket Club. The leaders will be Anita and Norma and the walk will be 4 miles long.
