ROYAL wedding celebrations are to take place across Harrogate today as the town shows its royalist spirit.
There are more street parties here than in any other town or city of the same size in the north of England, and thousands are expected to take part.
St Peter’s Church is opening up its doors for the wedding at 11am, while bars and restaurants in the town centre have themed menus for the big day.
Gilly Bendtson, of Spring Grove, is one of those who has set up a street party.
“I just think it’s so exciting,” she said. “At first we just wanted a street party, but it’s really taken off, we’ve almost 130 people.
“I’m almost hoping nobody else signs up as we’ve nowhere to fit them!”
Neighbours have been setting out the trestle tables and hanging out the bunting in preparations for today’s festivities, which will include barbecues and fancy dress.
“Everybody’s been fantastic,” said Mrs Bendtson.
“It’s just about the occasion, a lovely couple getting married and we want to share it with them.”
