Do you know the way to San Jose? A Harrogate couple have discovered that despite the song, High Street Travel Agent Thomas Cook, do not know the way to San Jose, or at least the right San Jose.
Andrew and Julie Kelham booked a 14-day trip from Thomas Cook in Harrgate hoping to travel to San Jose del Cabo in Mexico to see their daughter who had been working in the country.
However when they got off the plane at San Jose International Airport and couldn’t find their daughter at the arrivals gate they realised they were 1,550 miles away in San Jose, California.
Mr Kelham told The Sun newspaper it had been a nightmare and they missed two days of their holiday with their daughter who had been working in Mexico for over eight months.
Mrs Kelham, said: “She was crying her eyes out. We couldn’t take it in.”
The couple booked their holiday at a Thomas Cook branch in Harrogate and were correctly booked to stay at a Hotel in Mexico with flights from Manchester to Chicago, and then on to San Jose.
Instead of spending their first night of their holiday catching up with their daughter, Julie and Andrew had to sleep on airport chairs before paying £800 to fly to Mexico the next day.
The couple were initially offered an £800 refund and £100 goodwill voucher from the travel company, but this then increased to £1,400.
A spokeswoman for the agent’s booking arm, Netflights, part of the Thomas Cook group said: “We know how important holidays are for our customers and strive to meet and often exceed their expectations.
“The type of incident experienced by Mr and Mrs Kelham is extremely rare, and we would like to again apologise to the couple for any inconvenience caused. We’ve spoken to them since their return and have since resolved this matter to their satisfaction.”
There are over 30 towns or cities in the world with the name San Jose including four different places in Mexico and more than ten in Guatemala.
