THE company behind the scheme to build a new hotel in Ripon has unveiled more details about the proposals after planning permission for the development was granted.

As reported two weeks ago, Canalside Developments – run by brothers Andrew and Jonathan Lupton, who also manage ECON Engineering Ltd – has been granted permission to build the 45-bedroom hotel on Boroughbridge Road, east of Ripon bypass.

The venture will create up to 20 new full- and part-time jobs and is expected to be operated by one of several potential hotel brands once negotiations have been concluded.

Jonathan Lupton said: “We haven’t finalised the designs as we are still establishing who will be the best hotel partner for us and the city but we expect to be able to name a tenant in the next few months and provide more details and estimates for an opening date.”

The site has been granted permission for a two-storey hotel, with restaurant bar and leisure facilities on site as well as car parking.

Situated close to the racecourse and overlooking the canal, the company says the new hotel will provide a 50 per cent boost to the city’s hotel accommodation –increasing bed space which is in great demand during the peak tourist season and also on key race day meetings.

Although negotiations with potential hoteliers are at an early stage, it is likely the hotel will be a three star property or similar standard.

Property agent Matthew Tootell, of GVA in Leeds, has been appointed to manage the negotiations with potential hotel partners.
