More than £1.5m of National Lottery funding was awarded to projects across the Harrogate district last year, and now the lucky chosen few also have the chance to secure another pot of money up for grabs.

The Harlow Hill Squash and Sports Club was awarded a £20,000 lottery grant through Sport England for refurbishments, and is now eligible to enter the National Lottery awards for the chance to be named as one of the nation’s favourite projects and benefit from a further £3,000 grant.

Club treasurer Jim Ruddy, said: “There has been a real buzz about the club since we had the work done, and we’ve noticed a good increase in people playing on a regular basis in the early evenings.”

The club’s big refurbishment included improving playing surfaces, installing energy-saving lights into the courts, and re-decorating the rooms.

The committee is looking at using future funds to work on the upstairs social area.
