Winter comes to Knaresborough

A heavy downfall of snow overnight has caused chaos in Knaresborough today.

Schools have been forced to close and many roads are hazardous.

Forest School, St Marys Primary School and King James’ School were all closed due to the snow, although King James’ is still open for exams.

Transdev cancelled all school services this morning and the 1A 1B 1C are not serving the Knaresborough Estates due to icy conditions.

There have been no reports of delays at Knaresborough train station.

Although the majority of main roads have been cleared, side roads remain icy and hazardous.

Andrew Overend from Wetherby was unable to drive his car up Kirkgate or Hilton Lane, leaving him trapped at Knaresborough train station.

He said: “I dropped by mum off at Age UK then drove down here and now I am stuck.

“Both are the roads are too slippy and icy to drive up, it’s diabolical, the council have just gritted the main roads and they get cleared by the traffic anyway.”

Meanwhile many people made the most of the snowy conditions and crowds were seen sledging and building snowmen outside Knaresborough House.

Knaresborough House gardeners, Keith Wincup and Arturo Garcia Bollau were hard at work out clearing the paths outside Collins Court. Mr Wincup said: “It makes it a bit easier for people to get out and about if the paths are clear.”

The Met Office have issued an Amber weather warning for heavy snow which is expected to stay in place for the rest of the day.
