Rugby league players from Leeds Rhinos and Catalan Dragons tackled a cycling challenge in Harrogate - with the backing of super sprinter Mark Cavendish.

The players took part in a speed sprint event to celebrate the launch of their new Tour De France-themed kits at the Specialized store on West Park in Harrogate - yards from the 2014 Tour de France stage one finish line.

And cycling superstar Cavendish, whose mother is from Harrogate, recorded a special message for the stars as they took on the challenge.

Leeds Rhino’s Kevin Sinfield and Jamie Peacock swapped the scrums for the pedals as they competed in a sprint speed event on stationary bikes inside the store.

Kevin Sinfield, captain of the Leeds Rhinos, said: “To be involved in the Tour de France and play a small part and celebrate that fact is great.

“It’s important that the Tour de France is coming to Harrogate, it’s great for Yorkshire and it certainly raises the awareness of the sport and the town. Hopefully it will get more people active and out on their bikes.”

Jamie Peacock echoed his teammate’s enthusiasm to be involved with the Tour de France, adding that he and his family will be watching when the event comes through the town.

He said: “It’s a worldwide event, most people throughout the world know what the Tour de France is so for it to come here is a real pull for the county. It’s a real coup.

“I’ll be watching it myself. The family are coming down for it and my wife is pretty keen on it so we’ll be watching it.”
