Emergency services have faced a busy day of incidents after high winds hit Harrogate, closing shops, schools and pulling down power cables.

Killinghall Primary School was forced to close this morning due to safety concerns and fallen trees and debris have blocked several roads across the district.

Roofing work was being done at the primary school as the winds picked up the plastic sheeting blew into the road and the school decided to shut at about quarter past nine, sending pupils home.

Gusts of up to 80mph were forecast for the district and Harrogate Town Centre was almost deserted and people opted to stay indoors.

The Carphone Warehouse shop on Cambridge Street was taped off after the sign fell and smashed in the street.

The roof of the car wash at Sainsburys on Wetherby Road has been damaged by the winds.

North Yorkshire Police dealt with over 20 wind related incidents before midday.

Hookstone Road in Harrogate is closed after a large tree fell and blocked the road.

Power cables have been brought down a fallen tree blocking Pottery Lane in Littlethorpe and Church Lane, Harrogate towards Leadhall Lane has been blocked by a fallen tree which has taken down BT cables.

North Yorkshire County Council Highways department are currently dealing with incidents on the following roads which are passable with care:

- Tockwith Road, Long Marston. Fallen tree.

- Foldshaw Lane, Dacre. Fallen tree 300yds South of Dacre Braithwaite School.

- Leeds Road, Harrogate. Fallen tree near BMW garage blocking one lane.

- King’s Road, Harrogate. Roof tiles falling onto footway.

- Park Street, Harrogate. Fallen tree blocking road.

- A59 York Road, Knaresborough. near to North East Tyres on the bypass, wood is blocking part of the road.

- Green Lane, Harrogate a tree is blocking the road.

North Yorkshire fire and rescue were called out to a unsafe metal shed on St Andrews Walk and a metal fence which had blown away at the rear of Dragon Parade.
