The Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton gave the Tour de France a royal send-off as she cut the ribbon at the Grand Depart’s ceremonial start.

Prince William and Prince Harry accompanied the Duchess of Cambridge as she officially launched the 2014 Tour de France at Harewood House, near Wetherby.

The race had already passed out of the centre of Leeds, but the riders were in a neutral zone, which meant no team could launch a breakaway.

A brass band played the national anthem before Kate, William and Harry met the riders on the start line.

Kate took time to talk to reigning Tour de France winner Chris Froome and British sprinter Mark Cavendish.

Cavendish is the favourite to win Saturday’s opening stage, which will finish in Harrogate at approximately 4.20pm.
