Light up a Life is '˜a lovely way to remember dad', says Pateley Bridge family

In April last year, a month after hearing he had terminal cancer, Paul Philpott, a former distribution manager for Austin Reed in Thirsk, celebrated 40 years of marriage to soulmate Mary.

Surrounded by their children and grandchildren, the couple renewed their vows in a moving ceremony at Our Lady Immaculate RC Church in their home town.

Paul wanted to ensure he spent as much time with his family as possible, creating memories they could cherish.

“When Paul’s illness progressed, the consultant suggested that Saint Michael’s could support him to manage his symptoms,” Mary said.

“The support we received was invaluable. The hospice is such a unique and peaceful place. Paul felt very safe, comfortable and loved there.”

On October 25, 2015 Paul, 63, died peacefully at Saint Michael’s Hospice with his wife and children, Alison, Chris and Andrew by his side.

Paul’s daughter, Alison, 33, said: “Family meant so much to dad. The hospice ensured that before he became too ill, he was able to spend time alone with each of us, where we were able to really open up to each other and for him to say the things he needed to say.”

Last Sunday, the Philpott family came together at Ripon Cathedral to celebrate the memories of Paul which continue to illuminate their lives each day.

Alison said: “We all feel the Light up a Life service is a lovely and comforting way to remember him at Christmas, especially for the children.”
