Letter: Oscars - A salute to our volunteers

After the excitement of the Volunteer Oscars last week, I’d like to congratulate all the volunteers from across the Harrogate district that were nominated and received well-deserved acknowledgement for their hard work and dedication.

It is always inspiring to hear the stories and achievements of those who willingly give up their time to help others and make the Harrogate District such a great place to work and live.

We wish we were able to nominate every single one of the 600 volunteers who make such a valuable contribution to the work we do at Saint Michael’s.

Volunteers outnumber paid staff six to one, so we simply could not continue the vital work we do, supporting more than 2,000 families each year living with terminal illness and bereavement, without this bedrock of support from our local community.

Our volunteers – our everyday heroes – are involved in every single area of Saint Michael’s activities; listening to and supporting patients and families, helping our events run smoothly, answering phones, making calls and going out into the community to spread the word about our services, and giving customers a great experience in our community shops.

We would like to publically pay tribute to their skills, their commitment, their enthusiasm and their passion and say a heartfelt “thank you”.
