A prime retail site neighbouring the new Marks and Spencer store on Leeds Road has been put on the market.
It had been previously believed that the entire building would become an Marks and Spencer food store.
A spokesperson for Marks and Spencer said: “I am quite surprised to hear that it is news to people, this has always been the plan from the start.
“The majority of the space will be a Marks and Spencer Food store, and part of the building will be let out to another retailer.”
A design an d access statement submitted to Harrogate Borough Council’s planning department in November 2011 stating: “The building use will be for food retailing and the proposed tenant is M&S simply food.”
Planning Case officer at Harrogate Borough Council, Gerard Walsh explained that additional planning permission would not necessarily be needed to divide a building.
He said: “Generally if it’s retail it’s retail, and the plans are still for retail use in that building.”
The unit is being marketed by Manchester based property conultants Cheetham and Mortimer.
In their promotional material they say the 11,000 sq ft of space ‘will sit adjacent to a new 22,000 sq ft Marks & Spencer Simply Food Store in a highly prominent corner location with 179 designated car parking spaces.’
Cheetham and Mortimer also say that the unit will be ready to lease in June 2014.
A spokesperson for Marks and Spencer added: “The work is progressing at the site but it is still far too early to say anything about who the other retailer could be at this stage.”
