A LONG-serving Harrogate landlady has retired from her town centre business.

Julie Gardiner, 55, had been in charge of Hedleys Wine Bar since 1996, first as a partner and then as sole owner from 2006.

But her link with the venue went back to 1980, when she started work there and was quickly promoted to manager. She had trained at catering college to be a chef and housekeeper, but found she preferred the front-of-house work to being behind the scenes.

She said: “It has been a very happy time and I’m thankful to all my customers, staff and suppliers who have made it that way.

“I was not particularly sad to come away because I’m looking forward to my new life, but I will miss the people.”

Now, she plans to spend more time with new husband Duncan, travelling and seeing their family.

Meanwhile, Hedleys has changed hands and will reopen this month as The Claret. Owners Anna and Darcy Bleiker, formerly of the Malt Shovel Inn at Brearton, are holding an open day on Sunday, March 13 from noon.
