A 21-year-old woman from Harrogate is preparing to provide insight into mental health at a Knaresborough school in September.
Rebecca Walker, who lives with her own mental health problems, has been accepted to talk about mental health and raise awareness in year 10 citizenship classes at King James’s School.
“My mental health problems developed when I started self harming when I was 13,” she said.
“People kept saying it was a phase and that nothing was underlying it, but I ended up going into hospital and missing my GCSEs.
“I just think so many lives can be saved if you listen to people and don’t go in with your own conceptions that if you’re young it must be your hormones.”
Rebecca has also filmed a video about her experience in order to raise awareness, which has had almost 800 views since February.
She said: “Children need to know about these things and I think if someone like me had seen the video I made when I was 12 or 13 I would have had very different ideas.”
