Bicycle Touring Club: waiting for friends near the council offices I wandered over to a plaque that caught my eye in the gardens opposite the Royal Hall. With a lot of talk about the 2014 Tour de France cropping up I thought that some of you might be interested to know what it said. The heading is Bicycle Touring Club and it then goes on to say : “ The first touring club in the world was formed here on August 5 1878 when a meeting of cyclists founded the Bicycle Touring Club which in 1878 became the Cyclists Touring Club “ On July 5 2014 when Tour De France participants in stage 1 of the Grand Depart Yorkshire on their state of the art machines pass this insignificant plaque it will give us the chance to visualise the progress of cycle manufacture over the intervening years since those enthusiasts gathered on the same spot.
