With acts handpicked from across the globe, the Harrogate Comedy Festival returns for its eighth year this weekend.
Running across both Harrogate Theatre and the Royal Hall, this year the event will have an international flavour with numerous acts hailing from across Europe, Australia and America.
“It’s an ecclectic programme with a real international flavour,” says comedy festival programmer Emma McDowell.
She’s right - the festival is definitely an ecclectic mix with a programme which ranges from the observational to the surreal.
Stand-up comedian Ross Noble will be the first to take to he stage, bringing the wit that has made him a familiar face on panel shows like Have I Got News For You to Harrogte.
Alongside Noble, the award winning Russel Kane will be joining the line up as well, along with Adam Hills, best-known as the presenter of The Last Leg, Andrew Lawrence and Jo Caufield.
As well as a succession of top stand-ups, the festival will also see an appearance from the leftfield sketch group Gein’s Family Giftshop and The Boy With Tape On His Face who made it to the final of America’s Got Talent.
“We’ve got a mix of the topical, the terrifying, the political and the polarising,” says McDowell.
On the weekend of October 8 and 9, the festival will open its doors to a younger audience with a kids’ comedy club, a comedy quiz, live local music as well as the usual stand-up.
The festival has built a reputation for unearthing new talent over recent years and once again it wil be playing host to the Comedian of the Year Competition. Two heats will see emerging stand-ups battle for the title and a spot at the coveted Hyena Comedy Club Closing Gala on October 15.
