A NIDDERDALE man is appealing for help as he compiles a record of all those from the area who died as a result of service in the First World War.
“I have obtained all the names from the various war memorials from Ripley through to Middlesmoor; the list currently stands at an astonishing 153 names,” Alan Tidswell said.
“My intention is to produce a memorial to all the men from Nidderdale who paid the ultimate sacrifice by compiling a brief description of each man’s service.
“When completed I intend to donate the finished manuscript to the various churches where, at present, only the men’s names are recorded.”
Most of the information is available on the Commonwealth War Graves website, but there are 21 names not recorded there of whom Mr Tidswell has been unable to find a record from any other source. They are listed below.
“If anyone can shed any light on the identity of any of the men listed, I would be very grateful,” he said.
He is looking to establish the rank, serial number, regiment and birth details of each of the men, along with where they died and where they are buried or remembered.
If you can help, email Alan at firstname.lastname@example.org, or phone him on 01423 780759 or 07989 779996.
