Harrogate Theatre calls it The Big Weekend and the exciting and fun programe of events this Saturday and Sunday certainly lives up to the billing.

Acoustic music, beer and art is added to Harrogate Comedy Festival events to make the theatre - and its Circle Bar - the place to be this weekend.

Harrogate Theatre and RedHouse Originals Gallery are excited to present an exhibition by surreally brilliant local artist Thomas James Butler as an artistic treat in the Circle Bar at Harrogate Theatre on Oxford Street

Launched this Saturday, October 8, Funny How? features surreal portraits of legendary faces from the world of comedy including Laurel & Hardy, Spike Milligan and Victoria Wood.

Following the success of Noel Fielding’s exhibition at Harrogate Theatre in 2015, York-based artist Butler has created 11 original collages in his trademark style as part of the Comedy Festival’s Big Weekend.

Born in Harrogate in 1982, Butler said: "Ever since watching Vic Reeves Big Night Out, comedy has been as big an influence on my life as art and music and it's an honour to be involved in this exhibition.

"Choosing the subjects was the hardest part, but I have tried to go with the artists that have affected my life. Whether it be listening to Hancock's Half Hour in my dad's car or staying up late to watch Vic and Bob, these people have given me the sense of humour I have today.

"As Charlie Chaplin said 'a day without laughter is a day wasted' and I have all these subjects to thank for those days not wasted."

Funny How? exhibition is presented in association with Arts Emergency, who create unique opportunities for young people that are least able to access the arts, humanities and creative industries, through their mentoring programme, inspirational speakers and by offering industry contacts and networking opportunities to those who have none.

As for the live acoustic music, Circle Live will feature Circle Live will local singers Jamie Bevan, Rufus Beckett and Sarah-Louise Boyle this Saturday from 3.30pm, supported by Andrew Cameron.

Funny How? exhibition runs at Harrogate Theatre’s Circle Bar from October 8-16 October 2016.
