Harrogate played host to a distinguished commodore this month at the Sea Cadets Unit’s annual awards night.
Commodore Baum RN is the personal assistant to the naval regional commander for Northern England & Isle of Man, based at HMS Eaglet in Liverpool.
The commodore made the journey to Harrogate on invitation from the unit’s commanding officer Michelle Blackburn.
The commanding officer led the evening by announcing the runners up and the winners while the commodre and the Mayor of Harrogate, Coun Michael Newby, presented the cadets with their awards.
A surprise award was given to the unit’s newest member of staff, PCI Abigail Langford, who was presented with a BTEC Diploma in Music.
PCI Langford has been a cadet for many years and on turning 18, she decided that she would like to continue as staff at the unit.
She was totally unaware that the final presentation of the awards night would be going to her.
PCI Langford had previously completed her BTEC Certificate in Public Services.
She also went on to do the accreditation for BTEC in Music.
Her work was submitted and her assessors were very impressed.
So much so, they awarded her a BTEC Diploma in Music.
Harrogate’s BTEC programme is co-ordinated by the unit’s chairman, Mr Derek Sutherland, who said he was delighted with PCI Langford’s success.
The commanding officer said PCI Langford is continuing Harrogate’s high standards in music.
