Young teach old to use mobiles
A PROJECT to teach elderly people in Harrogate how to make better use of their mobile phones won a team of Rossett School students second place in a Dragons' Den-style competition.
Held at Venturefest Yorkshire, entrants into Griffin's Nest had to come up with a prototype of a product or service of benefit to their local community.
Jonny Metcalfe, Cameron Funnell, Sabelle Groves and James Hoang, all in Year 11, set up a display about an initiative that saw them visit Harrogate residential homes such as Arthington Court, on East Parade.
The group worked with elderly residents on a one-to-one basis, showing them how to create and read text messages, navigate a basic mobile phone menu, make calls, store contact numbers, adjust the volume settings and even take pictures.
As well as discussing the project with the judges, the students had to give a five-minute presentation.
"Most Innovative"
"It was such a great experience, both the competition and helping the people in the residential centre," said Sabelle Groves. "I know we'd all like to go back and see how they're getting along. It was this, plus our team's dedication and enthusiasm, that made the day and competition entry successful."
The Teach2Text project won the Most Innovative trophy for the team as well as a cheque for 500 from the event sponsors, the Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York.
Dr Paul Shepherd, governor of the Merchant Adventurers, said: "The Griffin's Nest has provided proof, if it were needed, that young people in the region are committed to supporting their local communities while at the same time demonstrating their qualities as potential entrepreneurs of the future."
The students also had the opportunity to meet representatives of hundreds of Yorkshire's businesses at the Venturefest event and learn about life in the world of commerce.
